Overview

Afterlight is a concert diary app that helps you log and track your live music experiences. Your diary works on your device without an account; Sign in with Apple is optional and links Friends plus a Convex cloud copy to your Apple account. This copy is separate from an operating-system device backup.

Data Storage

When you use Afterlight:

  • Concert logs (artist, venue, date, ratings, reflections) are stored on your device by default
  • Photos, audio, and video clips you attach are copied into the app's private storage on your device
  • Removing the app normally removes its local data container. Device backups may retain a copy according to your operating-system settings; exported files and account/cloud data are separate
  • If you join Friends with Apple, your diary entries and attachments sync to Convex so your Apple account can recover them on another install
  • Confirmed concert records can include exact attended-venue latitude and longitude. When the optional Apple-linked cloud copy is active, those coordinates can be included with the night. This describes venues you log, not continuous device GPS tracking
  • Your public username and non-private diary entries are used for Friends and web profiles

Private entries can be included in the Apple-linked Convex cloud copy. The app excludes private entries from Friends feeds, public profiles, public links and overlap rooms; private does not mean absent from that cloud copy.

Third-Party Services

Some features send limited data to external services:

  • Setlist.fm — artist/venue/date search queries, to find shows and setlists
  • Scanning via Convex and OpenAI — on-device text recognition runs first. A configured online fallback sends a resized ticket/poster photo and installation ID to Convex for processing and rate limits; the photo is forwarded to OpenAI to suggest concert fields. Check the result before saving, keep private details out of the frame, or log manually
  • Convex — optional Friends usernames, Apple-linked account identifiers, follows, reports, blocks, diary backup, and non-private shared diary entries
  • Sentry diagnostics (when configured in a build) — crash reports, performance data and diagnostic device/app context. Supplied user context may include an account ID or email. Diagnostic processing is separate from optional usage analytics
  • PostHog (when configured in a build) — usage and screen events with SDK identifiers and supplied account/event properties, which may include an account ID or email. Usage data is not necessarily anonymous. Configuration and collection can vary by app build

Optional lookup and import features contact Setlist.fm, MusicBrainz and Ticketmaster for concert metadata, or Spotify when you connect a music account. Provider processing and ordinary request metadata follow the providers' policies; we do not promise a specific provider retention period or deletion of their backups.

We do not sell your data to third parties.

Data Retention

  • Your concert logs stay on your device until you delete them
  • Use the account-deletion action under Profile → Friends to request removal of your account and active Convex cloud diary copy. Signing out or removing the app alone does not delete this account. Older attachment files may require a separate ownership review; we do not promise that every legacy file is removed automatically
  • The published 1.2.1 app offers JSON concert-record export from Profile. It contains media references, not a self-contained copy of the attachment files
  • Files you export, share or save elsewhere remain under your control after app or account deletion

Upcoming portable backup — 1.3.0

This change is in the upcoming update and is not available in the published 1.2.1 app. Portable ZIP export includes concert records and attached photos, audio and video, up to 64 MB. It includes private nights and is not encrypted: choose a private storage or sharing destination. Creating a ZIP may download cloud-restored attachments to include their bytes.

The ZIP is decoded on your device. Restore adds nights that are missing (matched by entry ID, artist, venue and date, or event ID), never replaces existing entries, and omits optional catalog artwork so imported artwork URLs are not loaded. If you are signed in to Apple-linked Friends, restored entries and attachments can subsequently sync to your optional Convex cloud copy. Favorites, credentials, preferences and unconfirmed recovery candidates are outside the archive. Earlier JSON exports can also be restored as records only; their media references are not loaded. Missing or inaccessible media can prevent complete export. App deletion does not remove files saved elsewhere.

Upcoming online scan permission — 1.3.0

The upcoming 1.3.0 candidate asks for affirmative permission for each image before the online fallback prepares or uploads it. The choice names the smaller photo sent through Convex to OpenAI for concert-field extraction, plus the random per-install identifier and scan counts sent to Convex. Declining keeps the image local and manual entry available; confident on-device recognition does not require this online permission. This new per-image choice is not established behavior of the published 1.2.1 app.

Broader recovery tools — in development

Gmail ticket-email recovery, Device Calendar recovery and a broader shared-file/text Recovery Desk are in development. They are not established features of the published 1.2.1 app; the portable ZIP update does not establish their release availability.

The planned Gmail flow explicitly connects to Google, reads a bounded set of likely ticket messages and saves concert candidates rather than full message bodies. Planned calendar recovery reads events when you run it. Shared files or pasted text are processed for concert fields, with unconfirmed candidates stored on the device. If you later save a candidate as a diary entry while signed in to Friends, it can join your optional cloud copy.

Your Rights

  • Access — view all your data in the app
  • Export — download your concert history
  • Deletion — remove entries individually, delete your Friends account, or delete the app
  • Portability — your data is yours
